Statement of Caiden Cowger on the Passing of Justice Tim Armstead

I first knew Tim when he was serving as Speaker of the House. Even as a teenager, I could call him with a concern, and he would always take the time to listen.

When I was selected as a ‘30 Under 30’ honoree by the Washington Examiner’s Red Alert Politics, Tim was the first person to congratulate me. As a kid freshly in politics that had already experienced adversity, Tim’s encouragement and kindness provided a source of strength and a gentle reminder to persevere.

He was a diligent conservative, but more importantly, he was a man whose heart was trained on God and committed to doing the right thing for our communities.

When Tim launched his first campaign for the West Virginia Supreme Court, my creative agency was honored to be retained to produce his very first statewide television ad. In that process and anytime I would see him, I witnessed up close his humility, his steadfast faith, his love for his family, and his deep commitment to the people of our state.

His life and career reflected the charge given in 2 Chronicles 19, when King Jehoshaphat appointed judges and said: “Consider what you are doing, for you do not judge for mankind but for the Lord who is with you when you render judgment. Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you; be careful about what you do, for the Lord our God will have no part in injustice or partiality.”

Justice Armstead embodied those words. He rendered judgment with wisdom and impartiality, always careful in his decisions, but never wavering in his heart for service. He was a strong constitutionalist, a sincere encourager, and a man dedicated to strengthening our communities.

My prayers are with his family and all of us who mourn his passing. West Virginia has lost a pillar, but heaven has gained a faithful servant.
